I think the main reason foreigners like myself tend to refer to the Netherlands as Holland is that "Holland" is easier for people to say and "Netherlands" sounds a lot like "nether regions" which is an old time term for hell.

Since i've been to The Netherlands (and enjoyed myself immensely) i know that it is anything but a hell.
