There's certainly plenty of special effects, but IMO it was all done very tastefully and fitting with the movie's visual style. One thing that's going for this movie very strongly is that Miller hasn't given into a lot of the visual gimmicks you see in movies these days - he's still directing and editing movie in the way he would've done in the 80s. IMO, whatever technical fanciness there is in the movie, it's very much at the service of the film's overall feel. And it doesn't feel anything like the typical effects-laden action film these days. It actually makes a lot of recent blockbusters look quite bad by comparison.
