110 rounds was the usual outfit for a type IX. Compared with the 8.8cm gun used by the VII, the shells (including their case) were 20 pounds heavier, the actual gun mounting weighed 2 1/2 tons more, and the shells were four inches longer. I'd assume limited storage space in the hull, the greater destructive power of the gun, and the importance of keeping properly trimmed underwater, were all contributing factors.
