In 1939 to about 1942, the average depth charge, or wasserbom was loaded with 500 lbs of high explosive dropped to about 152 meters or 498 feet. If you can stay safely below 170 meters, they will never hit you.
By 1942 to the end, there is no safe depth. You must run. And you die, tired.
