You sank a cruiser with your deck gun? What level are you playing on?
You: One 5" gun.
Him: At the very least four 6" guns.
You: Designed to sink.
Him: Designed not to sink.
You: 1200 tons or so.
Him: 5000 tons minimum.
One ramming by any warship should sink you. In real life even a destroyer would easily turn you into a non-diving gunboat. More likely he would sink you easily. Submarines are not made for gun duels with other warships.

Torpedoes have a minimum arming distance so they won't accidentally explode right after leaving the tube. It's not usually 500 yards, but you should always try to be on the safe side. Sounds like you're doing it right.
