You know greystone i have to admit to my own rookie mistake.
It was a few years back and i was patrolling dangerously close to Plymouth and i spotted a few destroyers headed eastbound in the channel. It was dark, sighted the scope on the aft most destroyer at the upper end of torpedo range and i fired a spread of 2 tightly grouped.
One impacted the destroyer astern the other missed
the stricken ship slowed to about 1-2 knots and hunkered down very low in the water while the others continued on
I closed the range to finish her once the others were gone and much to my surprise as i closed in... those flags were kriegsmarine
"What the hell are you doing 50 miles off Plymouth!" i said
i quickly left the area and continued my patrol
I was not credited with a sinking of the destroyer thankfully because as far as i know in the game it never sank.
EDIT: in reference to the above comments about map contacts colors... if you are using GWX the map contacts are gray and will not show red for enemy and green for neutral etc on the nav map when a ship is spotted (in the original release, ALL map contacts were color coded sunk or not) however - in GWX even though the "living" ship's map contact icon is gray, it will still show red or green or blue once sunk - i think that is what scout is talking about
