I'd wager at least six or seven; campers, Harry Truman, Reid Blackburn, David Johnston. IIRC a lot of the 57 deaths were from the mudslides that engulfed the rivers around the volcano.
From a scientific viewpoint the eruption was quite interesting in its lateral blast, but the human cost was terrible...but at least there was warning of its eruption and people were able to evacuate, otherwise the death toll would have been a multitude higher.
