I had a similar problem. I had the file and the code from when I bought it. The servers to register it were unavailable, though.

That's the exact reason I now have two physical copies. One is the pre-release in the metal box the wife bought me, and this version that I can actually use.
(Purchased Friday. In the mailbox yesterday.)
