Should be metric...so I would say meters....the caribbean does have some of the deepest trenches in the world. That is why alot of the islands have active earthquakes....its where the continental plates meet...and the earth swallows itself....the ocean floor alone can go down to 2 miles (a little over 10,000ft) This would closely match your numbers whether it was in meters or feet....not to mention the technology they were using back then...they probably didn't have exact measurements of ocean floors for the depth sounding samples at the time....today they can cover more ground and scan entire ocean bottoms allowing for more accurate numbers....back then it was safer to put + if you weren't sure...I think they did this especially there since the ground is so rigid....causing more room for error....because you can only take an average of the area and who knows if you missed a spot......but, it is pretty fricken deep....I wouldn't want to take a uboat there...
