Well, if you aren't spotted on very dark, moonless nights, that is not unrealistic. If you are not spotted on moonlit nights that are only kinda-sorta dark, I can see why you are asking.
The last time I was in such a situation, I found out it wasn't really dark enough; I got a large volume of shells thrown in my direction. Tbh, I am leery of putting the enemy eyes to the test, and will usually make submerged attacks, when possible.
One other thing: It may be a matter of your monitor settings. That is, if you have your monitor settings adjusted to make your nights bright, the game may consider the environment very dark, even though you can see the enemy ships pretty well. I have my monitor adjusted so that nights are pretty dark, and this seems to work well. You might want to check yours.
Oh, and you might want to check the file structure of all your mods. Sometimes mods have a double folder that prevents them being enabled by JSGME. For many mods/patches this would not be noticed, but make for problems in game. For instance, if the RFB_2.0_Patch_23April2010 "patch" isn't properly enabled and active, you get terrible diving behavior in the S-class.
