An important carachteristic of SH4 is the engine loads only your current portion of campaign; not the whole campaign as SH3. Because that, you donīt have the infinite loading times of a SH3 modded (and subsequent possibility of CTDs). Also, the crew management is automatic with three watches; SH3 needs manual and unrealistic crew management.
Of course, also the engine admits shaders; impossible with SH3.
