I thought that the original Model T engine could run on three different fuels 1.gasoline 2.kerosine 3.ethyl alcohol. I doubt it had much to do with Rockefeller and more to with the simple fact at that time period because of the increased popularity of gasoline it became the most cost effect fuel.
Another factor was Prohibition which came into effect in 1919. You still have problems with 100% ethanol guess how crops are grown on a commercial scale? By using large amounts of fertilizers, herbicides and pesticides many of which are harmful and also happen to be produced using fossil fuels so it is not in fact all that green to produce ethanol. Not to mention the fact that you must also produce foods for human and animal consumption using the same plants that produce ethanol the full load of fossil fuels could not be placed on agriculture and also expect it to feed humanity.
