Some areas of India, such as Chennai (formerly Madras, and very nice by the beach ) or Kerala (which is very green and lush and has elephants) are very welcoming. Other areas such as Mumbai (a blanket of smog hung over the stupidly crowded city for the day we were there) or Delhi (just plain dirty and awful) were not worth visiting. Also worth noting, driving in India is not for the faint-hearted. The only rule seems to be 'keep it on the left of the road lads', and they don't stick to this very well. Getting a taxi from Rajkot airport to the in-laws house, the driver decided to take a shortcut the wrong way round a busy roundabout, and the traffic parted in front of us like it was the normal thing to do. I nearly had to change my laundry!
