Especially if the hatch was closed. One would be able to tell what speed the engines were set to by the amount of vibration on the bridge more than the actual sound of the engines. If the engine room doors were open then the sound would of course be louder. There are a few quiet scenes in Das Boot were this is noticeable, the diesel sound is just background noise.

Well, this is what I am trying to find out...if the previous sounds levels were realistic or the silenced ones in GW. As far as the opinions go, the film - Das Boot presented that the sound of engines in a submarine were quiet. On the other hand MLF says that diesels are quite loud on a ship. I compared GW sound files to the stock SH3 sounds:
Submarine_diesel_exterior.wav -> completely different sounds...GW sound has lower volume and not that high pitched
- this change sounds right
Submarine_diesel_underwater.wav -> the same samples, but in GW the sound is more silent (-30% - 40% maybe)
- here I have doubts, which one is right?
Submarine_electric_exterior.wav -> completely different sounds, GW's has much lower volume and is low pitched.
- also doubts, but I tend to think that electric engines were quieter than in stock SH3, so probably right
I will welcome any other opinions and hope we will come to some conclussion. Thanks to all, who have answered until now.
