EDIT: In all seriousness though, it's about time something like this was set up in order to co-ordinate the worlds military and space forces to combat a potential NEO threat and since the UN is probably the only major global co-ordinating force it makes sense to route it through the UN rather than set up another body to deal with it. Mining it? Why would they want to do that?
I'm sure both governments and a few others have been busy prepping for the coming apocalypse by building massive underground bunker complexes in order to save themselves and a few select elites. For them, a wipeout asteroid would be the perfect way to reset everything without that niggling millions of years requirement for rebirth of life on Earth.
I can't think of any other reason for a
huge amount of cash to disappear from the U. S. treasury with no explanation.
