Could it be something as simple as not switching the TVR back to Auto-update after you have entered the firing data?
I agree that the best way to find the problem, and improve your technique, is to whang away at the "ducks" in the training mission. Whatever tactic you use, if you can consistently hit the targets in the training mission, you'll feel more confident when you try to do it in an operational setting.
