Saw a program a few years back on the first Levi's, they didn't look much like today's jeans.
Jean cloth, of course, is nothing more than canvas. The use of the material in soldiers clothing (hemp or linen back in the day) was used for "coveralls" (French fly trousers and later drop-fronts), seaman's pants, etc., etc., goes back several hundred years.
