What I have heard is actually a bit more gruesome. As the boat sinks the pressure works on inhearant weak points of the sub. Usually some kind of packing or hull plug. It could also work on a very weak point caused by battle damage. The pressure gets to the point this weak point breaks. The pressure of the sea rushes in until the pressures are equalized both inside and out. Something tells me tons of water rushing in would knock the crew unconsious so perhaps they feel little if any pain.
Now saying that, I am sure there were boats that did the catastrophic implosion we have all seen on sub movies. But these would be boats that sunk in the deep deep sea.
I think it was the Uss Scorpion which had an implosion that was litterally the telescoping of a good portion of the stearn into the mid section of the hull. When they found the wreck it was so much shortened they thought they had found a different boat. That is till they saw the numbers on the sail.
But as far as the game, I wouldn't mind the implosion sound from SHII, and perhaps a longer outside view of the ship, with a full explanation of what the hell happened (the current screen leaves a lot to be desired). I don't think I need to see the ultimate destruction of my boat from crush damage. I do wish that when surface actions result in youy boat getting wrecked that it gave you the option to abandon ship, or even scuttle her. With full boat death scenes for those.
