You know, this feature definitely needs to be implemented in future subsims. Currently we tend to see ships & smoke ingame at about the same time, even though actual sub crews seem to have relied on smoke columns to lead them to ships. If you look at Uboat.net you may notice that many of the ships lost were steamers that would have emitted large amounts of smoke. Even taking into account how common steam engines were, the loss rate was probably disproportional.
