Well, 1. yes saving lives was part of the job, not only lifeguard duty but evacuating personnel from the philippines and other places, and 2. sinking japanese troop ships was saving american lives (provided they weren't transporting POW's)

that's beside the piont, what Sub officer wouldn't want this fine piece of art?
