in TOMI haven't had that trouble.....just one escort and that's it.
Using Traveller mod, 2.6, there are always two escorts, one DD and one tugboat.
I usually go ahead flank straightforward to his bow, go to periscope depth, fire a 3 torp spread shot (if available, electric torps are the best to this job)...... DD is out, the tugboat can be eliminated with your deck gun.
It takes some practice to do it right, but it works for me!
