Pressing 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5 should give you the foreward speed selected. And clicking on one with your mouse should also engage that speed requested.
Sounds like something is corrupted, either a mod or your mouse and/or keyboard.
If you are using a modified set of command keys, then forget the above.
