It's a real nuisance. You might try reading through this thread,
http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=211574 , for some understanding about game saves. I stay 55km from land, other ships and sinkings and hear nothing on the phones before saving. If I can't meet those requirements but absolutely have to leave, I pause the game and then alt+tab back to my windows desktop.
