I was three times inside the chanel with U17/S196 and we "played" with the anti-sub-ships of the Royal Navy. The excercise was called FOST (means first officer sea training). In 9 of 10 tries we sunk (simulated) them or escaped.
When we were invited to a british port, we played "Den Tipperary Song" when we went inside - funny thing because all other guys looked very angry towards us
(i donīt know why).
Try to get a job as radioman. On german subs they have the best job for lower ranks (the best job is to be "Der Alte", of course).
