For anyone browsing this later,

Data\Sound folder;
A:Submarine_diesel_exterior.wav
B:Vapor Siaj.wav
C:Submarine waves lap.wav

A is the actual diesel sound, unfortunately the one and only for all subs ingame, from Sugar boat to Balao.

B is the wake - bow wave - spray noise which gets louder the faster you go.

C is the splashing water when the boat is stopped and the diesels are stopped. I haven't done any real testing on it but when you order All Stop the diesel sound quits so all you hear is the spray, then it changes to the wave lapping sound around 10 knots.

So the trick is to reduce the volume of the spray so it don't drown out the diesels, and increase the volume and preferably increase the bass. Mine is actually an Alco diesel locomotive WAV with the volume cranked up, to me it sounds better than the Fairbanks-Morse or Winton.
