So the coroner makes a mistake... a pretty serious one. Through luck, no one actually died.

And the coroner calls it a "miracle".

I would call it "time to get another coroner"

It is still a shame that in too many states a Coroner does not need to be a doctor. The qualifications to be a "Coroner" in Mississippi?

  • Possess a high school diploma or its equivalent
  • Be 21 years of age or older
  • Be a qualified elector of the county in which elected
  • Attend the Mississippi Crime Laboratory and State Medical Examiner Death Investigation Training School, successfully completing all exams on the subject matter presented

To be a chief medical examiner investigator (CMEI), in Mississippi, you don't need any other qualifications. That's pretty sad.

At least Mississippi is better than Indiana. In 2007 in Indiana, a 17 year old high school senior passed the required coroner examination and was appointed a deputy coroner.
