answered your question. But have a look yourself at post #1 in the TWoS' thread: Open Horizons II (this is the name of the mod extending SH5's campaign to 1945) is featured in it.

You can do both. Completing objective/missions will give you better reward, better u-boat commands, and a wider variety of campaigns to choose from (when they become available), but should you choose not to conform to them, you will still get reward from sinking ships (useful for upgrading your boat), and the campaign will still go on to war end.
Many objectives are well spaced from each other, their timeframe being longer than it is actually needed for completing them. With skills and a bit of luck, you can complete the achievements of one objective and still get some spare time for your free patrols, before the next objective becomes available

Yep, the secret for not getting confused, is avoiding the "I want it all and now" syndrome, getting one's time, reading carefully mod instructions, and upgrading the game step by step. All-in-one mods like "The Wolves of Steel" make it all much easier though
