Actually snorkels often made the air worse. Fumes from the diesel engines inevitably seeped into the rest of the sealed and submerged ship causing headaches. The snorkels often 'dunked' causing the engines to draw air from inside the sub wreaking havoc with air pressure and eardrums. Snorkel use should probably double the rate of crew fatigue. They should also make the hydrophones useless as the din from the diesels made it impossible to hear anything else. Yet my hydrophone operator still picks up propeller noises fine while running the snort. However, as a virtual U-Boat captain I'll take any break the game system gives me.
