IXD2's were used on patrols though, in fact in 1945 the "tommies" sank U-864 a IXD2 near Fedje, Norway as it was trying to carry canisters of Mercury, blueprints and jet engine parts, and Scientists to Japan as part of the German/Japanese military trade pact.
During that action the captain of U-864 a "Ralf-Reimar Wolfram" attempted to sink the submarine H.M.S. Venturer, which ended up torpedoing and sinking him instead, which is also the first (and only) instance of a submarine sinking another submarine while both were submerged during WWII
