Actually letters and diaries 'from the front' tended to be
'spruced' for the King and Country Victorian( as in the American Civil War) aspect still in vogue as it was
not unexpected that eager recipients at home would pass or publish the missives to concerned other locals desperate for news from the front...other than the horrific casualty lists.
