To my mind a Q-ship was a merchant vessel that hid it's armament in an attempt to lure a U-Boat or submarine to the surface by looking the helpless victim. At which point the pretense was dropped, the batteries unmasked, and the guns opened fire.

As for armed merchantmen openly displaying guns, they were pretty much standard in Allied convoys by 1942-45.
