Is your S Boat a time machine?

Only kidding! How far ahead of the convoy are you? Determine their course and speed, and try to get ahead of them. May be tough in a S Boat, but you say they're going slow/medium so you may have a shot. Once you're far enough ahead, turn on a heading to intercept their track. The further ahead you are, the better. Also, even though the seas are smooth, you have darkness on your side. Stay surfaced if possible, as Japanese ASW was lacking especially early war. If you must submerge, do so at the latest possible time. Running submerged for too long, with a lot of escorts around is risky.
