Backups. If you have a steam registered game and, god forbid, something bad happens to your discs, you're still ok. You can just run it through steam, and if you need to reinstall you can download through them.
Fairly useful, I think...
(then again, I went and bought a second copy through steam because I DID lose my discs, before finding out that they were working on being able to merge into steam... DOH!)
