Another perspective (from someone on another forum).

Well, as we don't have the death penalty we need to be practical:

Life time in solitary. Bare cell, with nothing that can be adapted to use to commit suicide. Stainless steel, unbreakable sanitary facilities. Shower comes on for 5 minutes each day 30 minutes after lights on. 12hours darkness, 12 hours flourescent light every day. No books, radios, communication sources or clocks. 3 meals every day, basic, always the same. Guards don't speak, sound insulated from everyone else. 1 hour's exercise in a bare hall once a week, alone. Relative visit and letters once a year, limited to 30 minutes. No publicity. Health care interventions and meds as required. No hard labour, no abuse or threats. Nothing. just sitting, lying or standing in a cell, as time passes.

Same regime, day after day, decade after decade, without hope of release until death ensues from natural causes.
