It is a USA thing. You can see this in all Hollywood movies, where a car gets a small dent and then explodes in a way that a burning 10,000 ton freighter looks like a kindergarten, in comparison.
There is also a strange thing that american tyres will always screech, howl and squeal when driving around a corner, especially when the cars is faster than 2 mph, the street is wet, or it all takes place on sandy ground or rock.
From a physicist's point of view i think the atmosphere in the US is somehow more prone to burn or explode, may also explain the squeal of tyres, or better the transport of certain wavelenths, through the fuel-saturated air. I rest my case.
