Still, they gave us The Night of The Doctor, so we got to see #8 one more time.
Good story, good filming, good acting, good effects and a couple of great easter eggs. I'm satisfied.

Yes, the canon history of the Doctor was rewritten a bit!
I have a comic book,
The Forgotten, with the 10th Doctor, action pass soon after the end of his 3rd season. He begins to lose the memories of his past incarnations and each story showed is with one of the Doctors.
The 8th story is during the Time War and he his going for a device to end the war. And even if the comic book is not canon, I and possible several others always thought that the Doctor who fight on the war was the 8th!
I do not know if they thought of Ecclestone for this (and also thing a great homage to The Three Doctors) but since he always cut himself of anything to do with Doctor Who, Moffat may had a great idea and did something quite good with it!
Spoilers:
not to mention the several Time Children, the battles (the weapons, the beams that could be like the stasers [prevented the regeneration] and the lack of time capsules/ships/battleships against the Dales fleets)!
