Redwine: Sorry if the text is confusing - I feel confused myself after re-reading my own readme. Your query is best answered with an actual example.

The range of a submerged Type VIIC U-boat was 80 miles at 4 kts. This is what Von Helsching claims, and I have verified this and his other figures in my standard (British) U-boat reference book

For the VIIC U-boat, we have the file NSSUboat7C.sim, where the submerged range is clearly marked as '80' and 'miles'. Clearly marked, that is, if you can read floating point arithmetic in a data file.

However, the Ubisoft programmers multiplied this figure (80) by about 8/5 (eight-fifths) to convert it into kilometres, forgetting that sea ranges are handled in nautical miles (even by continental Europeans, who otherwise would use kilometres). This comes to about 128 kilometres, a value that was used internally by the program in the belief that it described miles.

In order to correct this error, since we can't change the internal hard code, the stated values in NSSUboat7C.sim have to be *divided* by eight-fifths, to compensate for the internal multiplication by eight-fifths.

The same problem affects all the other U-boats.

Is that any clearer?

The result of this error is that you have been travelling about 8/5 (eight-fifths) further underwater than you should. I wondered why I never seemed to drain the battery! Now you have to be much more careful.

SH3Battery Mod uses Von Helsching's figures uncritically. He claims, on the basis of his experiments, that the actual divisor (8/5) varies slightly between U-boat types.
