I never send anything to TDC. For stern shots I leave my scope at 180 degrees. I do not change anything at all. Whether coming from port to starboard or the other way around it really doesn't matter. I normally am within 1000 meters when I fire. I will follow the ship, tube doors open and I will wait until the ship is at 190 or 170 respectively and quickly shift my scope to 180 and fire. There is a built in offset at this range of ten degrees and I have learned to compensate for it by using this meathod. I have a 95% hit rate doing this. I also use the same method for firing the forward tubes.
I change no settings. I do no math. I have simply learned to lead the target by estimating speed in my head. Could I tell you how fast it was going? NO! But my brain doesn't need a number.
I find that if I have accidentally click any buttons anywhere this all gets thrown off so I have it set on manual targeting and never change anything except my scope heading. I will even at times keep the scope down and simply move the scope in order to fire in a direction I wish the fish to go too. I have used this method firing at radar bearings only and sunk merchants and capital ships in storms with it using non-homing torpedoes, it works that well.
The auto targeting makes it boring for me. Like harmsway said I make sure I am in a good position first. If I can not get into a good position and know this going into a run I will not ever try and simply move on. I'll position myself in front of convoys, night attacks from a perpendicular angle to the convoy and I'll get ahead of task forces and capital ships if possible and simply sit there all stop at periscope depth and wait for them. I'll do what ever I can to make sure I'm in the best position possible before I attack.
