Aircraft were always avoided whenever possible. Even friendly aircraft were avoided because they were just that dangerous. Enemy aircraft even more so- if they didn't sink, or do serious damage to your sub, they were sure to make the report that would send merchants scurrying out of the area and destroyers into it. There is NO upside to taking on aircraft as a sub commander.
