GAIM (freeware) will run all your messengers and my favorite meeting place for MP games has been Hyperlobby.
Something that happened today reminded me to encourage anyone who wants to try multi-player to come to hyperlobby and join up. We have had players finally get into a group then disconnect. No one cares. A target is a target.
