All of the major battles and many of the small battles are as well. Large Battles include Midway, Coral Sea, Eastern Solomons(Carrier Battle), Savo Island, Santa Cruz, Naval Battles of Guadalcanal I and II, Philippine Sea and Leyte Gulf(all parts...Palawan Pass, Surigao Strait, Battle off Samar, Sibuyan Sea) Smaller actions such as the various actions in Solomons in 1943 which seems to conclude with Battle of Empress Augusta Bay.The Yamato sails for it's final suicide mission in April 1945(although it is a day late, must be in an error, I went and fixed it in my game, so it arrives on time per history) and US planes show up to attack it in several waves.
There are other various smaller actions covered throughout the pacific and historical warship movements. This means when you see the Yamato, it is where it was at that time in the Pacific, so you are not running into a Yamato every patrol like in the stock game.Movement covers movements of various lights cruisers, heavy cruisers etc. Can open up the files with the mission editor to check it out or just do some research, go to the right area and hope you encounter them.Occasionally you will get contact reports and ULTRAs that will help you find them.
Some battles are easy to find, such as the engagements in the Solomons because are in a relatively confined area.Midway is the toughest, I think I have found the carrier force once out of many tries.Mainly because it is wide open ocean, no surface search radar since its early war, they are moving fast and since full of carriers, they launch planes that will keep you diving a bit.The one time I found Nagumo's carriers I happened to be along the path, dived at dawn and avoided planes, they came speeding along as I was about to attack dive bombers showed up and wrecked three of per history(I had to up the skill of the planes and add a few more to make this happen). I finished one off with Mark 14's if I recall, dodged a few depth charges.
They are there, just have to look but it's fun to see. Some turn out per history, others don't, some are close.
