In vista/7 you just had to go into compatibility mode for goblineditorapp.exe and change the setting setting "do not use visual themes" to on(checked).
In win8 we don't have that option. So instead I found that we need to enable (check mark beside) "reduced color mode". then in the drop down box below, set it to 8bit (256) colour.
PS - for those who don't realize I'm right clicking the goblineditorapp.exe, chosing properties at the bottom, then selecting the compatability tab along the top.
