When on trial at Nuremburg for 'aggressive warfare', Nimitz and four hundred other allied naval commanders came to Doenitz's defense, essentially saying that they had 'commited' the same offense and that the appearance of 'Victor's justice' should be avoided on that charge. That he had been temporary head of state after the death of Hitler, led to his 10 years imprisonment on 2 other political war crime charges but not on his role or conduct as leader of the Ubootwaffe.
