Go into the BIOS on bootup and see if there are any setting for the video adapter related to memory. Some BIOS makers allow you to "set" the amount of memory the integrated chip can access. Up that to as high as it allows (up to 512 or even 1GB) and see if it helps.

You must be mistaken, the "Mobile Intel(R) 4 Series Express Chipset Family" is the g45 chipset, aka this: http://www.intel.com/Assets/PDF/datasheet/320122.pdf

Its a vista era direct x 10 chipset designed to go with the core 2 duo family.

The Haswell Core I line is MUCH, MUCH better. In fact, the intel HD 5000 should be able to outperform the Xbox 360 and PS3, whereas the g45 (what he currently has) is approximately PSP level.
