The point I made regarding Das Boot was that it was the only film I've seen that made me feel as if I was on a WWII submarine....not in terms of the politics of the movie, but in terms of the atmosphere created.
The set was constructed in a way that no submaine movie before it had been. It was difficult to shoot, and the feeling of a crampted, uncomfortable environment was conveyed beautifully.
To me, SHIII conveyed that atmosphere pretty well, and the later games in the franchise were less successful. That's why I prefer SHIII over the later versions of the game.
