I think the appeal with Das Boot is the grittyness of it.

The attention to detail.
The characters.
Jurgen Prochnow was phenominal!

I love this movie, heck my avitar pic is from this movie! (Poor poor Johann)

I have been scouring the internet for the original German miniseries with english subtitles to not much success.

I feel like I missed alot of stuff with the subtitled movie I am familiar with.
