Reports of my problem being solved were way premature! Same old. After the submerged save mentioned above, found a large freighter and put it down. Ran away, then saved. Reloaded and - yep - CTDed. I'm going to try the following mod load:

I'm trying to limit mods to 1) GWX addon mods, 2) mods that don't alter any previously loaded mods, and 3) mods that make mostly cosmetic changes. Got a few that violate these rules, but we'll see.... May go with straight GWX just to reassure myself that
it is OK.
