Presumably the crew were going for some kind of gag whereby you, their commandant would be associated with Flower Corvettes for the rest of your career which would from then on be full only of ridicule and questions regarding your sexuality. But we all know about the German sense of humour, likely they couldn't devise an amusing way to complete their scheme and froze, caught between a quickly passing opportunity for light hearted if highly dangerous humour or admitting to their superior that they've just sailed themselves straight into the face of certain death, the dreaded Flower Corvette, no longer would they mock its girly name.
Anyway, you should load a save game and liquidate them all for their insolence, just because you can. Pass by some air coverage and send them up to man the binoculars until all have been strafed and bombed, then dive down the deepest depths of the ocean laughing hysterically and die in a blaze of glory rather than at the hands of a Flower Corvette.
