Much like Steve, I hardly make any calls, and those are short.
But the internet is my window to the universe, to the point it replaces tv altogether.
However I always have it with me. That is the purpose of it being mobile, I think.
I only replace them when they become unusable, and always go for the simplest models, for lots of reasons, mainly for longer battery life and reliability. I find smart phones to be somewhat more prone to failure, from both hardware and software problems.
I think younger people become more easily enslaved by phones because of their natural need to socialize intensively, while us older folks prefer some golden peace and quiet.
But I've known grown ups who became totally enslaved by the "gotta have the latest model that just came out" syndrome, buying a new phone almost every other month, without being sure they can pay their apt rent at the end of the month. Sad.
