Yeah I suspect that the wanted to create a spot to attract divers and sport fishing.So they did not want to take the time to make the thing truly safe before sinking.Like it says at the bottom of the article they wanted the money it would generate.Who cares what it does to the water and fish right?No way that claim that it will 100 years for it to slowly seep is true.

There was some TV program about the USS Spiegel Grove with that one they did clean it up before they sank it.
